This project was inspired by our collective love of the billboard as a platform for communication and our desire to recontextualize it into source of communal inspiration. This particular billboard is nestled into a residential corner of the Echo Park neighborhood in Los Angeles. We wanted to create a series of images that would reveal themselves over a number of days, so people walking or driving by would look forward to seeing the latest progression. It created a more interactive experience for the observer, which a traditional static billboard fails to do. Instead of having multiple photographs, we thought it would be more interesting if the imagery never fully revealed itself, but was instead composed of elements from multiple photographs. The decision to create something fragmented and layered was a direct response to the billboard as a medium and the unintentional compositions that occur when they peal or are ripped down, revealing layers of weathered ads from the past.
